Johnny Walker

As I continue my research on the temperance movement, I was drawn to this article which features Johnny Walker in the title. This made me thing of Johnnie Walker, the whiskey brand which originated in Scotland in 1820. This article titled "CHARGE OF ASSAULTING AND ROBBING 'JOHNNY WALKER,' EX-CHAMPION " was written in 1867.

A good chunk of this text was extremely difficult to read due to the quality of the print but I tried as hard as I could to make out the story. A man named John Elliot was charged for stealing from a man named John Walker. Elliot stole money, gold, a pocketbook and other valuable items from Walker's residence. Apparently, Elliot had met with a prisoner over a drink as they discussed how to perform the robbery. Walker was then attacked shortly after.

It seems to me that this is not a real story but a metaphor. This is an article that is commenting on the temperance movement. I feel that it is saying the temperance movement is clearly robbing alcohol manufacturing companies which in the long run will have a detrimental impact on the economy as a whole. Overall, everyone is going to suffer in one way, shape or form. It is more than a hit to the alcohol realm but it's a hit to us all.
